The SBTi provides frameworks and criteria to assist companies in defining and achieving Science-Based Targets (SBTs) that are consistent with keeping global warming well below 2°C above pre-industrial levels, in line with the Paris Agreement. This involves setting targets for Scope 1, Scope 2, and Scope 3 emissions, as well as establishing a clear pathway to reduce emissions in line with what the latest climate science indicates.
The initiative also offers guidance, resources, and validation to ensure that companies' targets are in line with sector-specific benchmarks.
For example, the global apparel and footwear sector produces more greenhouse gas emissions than the shipping and aviation sectors combined. In turn, SBTi’s guidance sheet supports companies in this sector to set science-based targets that are categorically relevant to reducing the fashion industry's emissions footprint.
Textile Exchange is the driving force for urgent climate action on textile fiber and materials. Textile Exchange is committed to the responsible expansion of textile sustainability across the global textile value chain. The goal set by experts on their team is for 30%* reduced CO2 emissions from textile fiber and material production by 2030.
Textile Exchange has created a platform for companies to set and measure their industry-specific benchmarks. The Materials Benchmark is the largest peer-to-peer comparison initiative in the fashion, textile, and apparel industry and showcases the progress of brands, retailers, suppliers, and manufacturers towards more sustainable materials sourcing.
